Baulderstone and Bilfinger Berger, in a joint venture with Dutch dredging specialist Jan de Nul NV, have been contracted to design and construct the Port Botany container terminal expansion for Sydney Ports Corporation.

AS CONSTRUCTION continues at Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group’s $A1.3 billion new export terminal, New South Wales Port Minister Joe Tripodi is encouraging Hunter Valley producers to chip in for expansion work to double its capacity to 60 million tonnes per annum.

Tripodi said letters have been sent to coal producers to invite them to take part in the expansion work.

MAGELLAN Petroleum Australia will look into building and operating a methanol plant near Darwin after signing a heads of agreement and exclusivity agreement with a major methanol producer.

Thiess wins $500 million project in Barrow Island |

Thiess has been contracted to construct the Site Preparation and Temporary Facilities for the Gorgon Project on Barrow Island for Chevron Australia.
The contract value is approximately $500 million. Thiess managing director David Saxelby says being awarded this contract was a positive addition to the $500 million Construction Village facility project that they were awarded last month, as part of a joint venture.

THE Australian Construction Industry Forum’s Construction Forecasting Council says the civil construction sector will remain “relatively unaffected” by the economic downturn.

In its June forecast, the CFC predicted most sub-sectors of engineering construction including road construction, bridges, rail and ports, electricity generation, telecoms, water and sewerage would have modest to significant growth over the next few years.

THE Queensland government will continue to outspend all other states on infrastructure, with a record $18.2 billion program for 2009-10.
Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the Bligh government would spend $2083 for each Queenslander on the 2009-10 building program – more than every other state and territory in the country.
