ENGINEERING construction work in Australia jumped 2.8% (trend estimate figure) from the December to March quarters, according to preliminary figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today.
Engineering work done in the three months to March was more than $17.5 billion – a 19.2% rise on the same period last year.

THE New South Wales government is pushing ahead with the Sydney CBD Metro underground rail line despite the project missing out on federal funding in last week’s budget.
The $5.3 billion CBD Metro project will connect Central Station with Rozelle via Town Hall, Martin Place, Wynyard and two new stations.

BIG contract wins are continuing to roll in for Leighton, with the construction major announcing today its Southern Gateway Alliance has been selected as the preferred bidder for the $290 million Mandurah Entrance Road in Western Australia.
The alliance, which comprises Leighton Contractors, WA Limestone and GHD, was selected by Main Roads WA for the project, which will be jointly funded by the federal and WA governments.

LAST night’s national budget promises to be a bonanza for the construction industry, with Treasurer Wayne Swan declaring the budget “has at its core the biggest plan for nation-building investment in infrastructure since the Snowy Mountains scheme”.

THE federal budget has been strongly backed by the Australian construction industry, which has welcomed plans for increased spending on infrastructure, home buyers grants as well as new and upgraded schools, hospitals and public housing.
The budget was mostly approved by construction industry groups including the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF), the Australian Constructors Association (ACA), the Master Builders Association (MBA), the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU).

THE Victorian government is investing an unprecedented $11.5 billion in state infrastructure in its 2009-10 state budget in an attempt to secure 35,000 jobs and ward off the impact of the global financial crisis.
Released yesterday, the Brumby budget has provided record infrastructure investment, which includes launching the first four years of the state’s 12-year $38 billion transport plan.
