THE construction of a $48 million bridge over the Mulgrave River in North Queensland has been completed eight months ahead of schedule, despite losing 27 working days to wet weather.

| The new bridge stands five metres higher than the previous crossing. |
The bridge, located approximately 20km south of Cairns at Gordonvale, was built by BMD Constructions in a joint venture with Brisbane-based construction company Albem Operations for the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

MACMAHON Holdings and joint venture partner Leighton Contractors have won a $A500 million contract from BHP Billiton Iron Ore for work on its Rapid Growth Project 5 in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The contract requires the joint venture partners to duplicate 220 kilometres of existing railway line between Port Hedland and Shaw Siding on the Mt Newman rail line, which forms part of RGP5.

THE Western Australian government today flagged the beginning of a plan to build 2000 new state housing dwellings, with the first 286 dwellings expected to be complete by July 2010 at a cost of $70 million.
The state and federal governments are set to join forces on the project, which was outlined in a statement yesterday by WA Housing and Works Minister Troy Buswell and federal Parliamentary Secretary for Government Service Delivery Senator Mark Arbib.

MUCH better-than-expected US industrial orders data boosted markets in the United States overnight, offering another sign that its stricken economy could finally be steadying after months of turmoil.
Orders for durable goods in February jumped 3.4 per cent, marking the first gain in six months, the best showing since December 2007 and trumping analyst forecasts for a fall of 2.4 per cent.

PERTH-based GR Engineering Services has received a letter of intent from Catalpa Resources to enter into a supply agreement to refurbish and construct the plant at its Edna May gold project near Westonia in Western Australia.
Catalpa dismantled and relocated its Big Bell mill to the Edna May site in 2007, and the refurbishment and recommissioning is the largest capital component of the $A92 million project.
