A TRIAL of recycled mining waste used as road base on Western Australia’s New Perth-Bunbury Highway could lead to reduced demand on the state’s sand quarries.

In WA each year some 25 million tonnes of bauxite residue is produced through mining. The WA-based Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing is researching ways to recast such waste materials as usable products.

MINERALS Council of Australia chief executive officer Mitchell Hooke believes Australia is heading towards a recovery, but is uncertain whether it will be V-shaped, W-shaped or bathtub-shaped.

WESTERN Australia’s $705 million New Perth Bunbury Highway, the state’s biggest-ever road project, was officially opened yesterday.

Premier Colin Barnett said the new road, now officially known as the Kwinana Freeway extension and Forrest Highway, was a key moment in the state’s transport history.

LEIGHTON Holdings and an Italian partner are favoured to win a $1 billion construction contract at the Gorgon LNG project, according to a media report.

The West Australian says a joint venture between Leighton and Italian oil and gas specialist Saipem is set to be awarded a $1 billion contract to build the LNG jetty at Barrow Island.

FEDERAL Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has approved Brisbane Airport Corporation’s 2009 Master Plan, clearing the way for major infrastructure investments on a domestic terminal, apron and taxiway upgrades, and a new $1 billion parallel runway.
